WHO AM I?
I'm Mike Brunet, principal at iDocuments.ca
I'm a Filemaker expert with more then 20 years of software development experience. I work from my home in Toronto, Canada which I share with my wife and two children.
In my spare time, I am currently writing a book on advanced Filemaker topics such as:
- UI design (desktop and mobile)
- eCommerce integration
- external database connectivity (SQL Server, mySQL)
- php web integration and web direct
Anticipated publication: Summer 2017
Being a small shop, I typically only work with 2 to 3 clients at a time. As a result, my clients are very important to me and I take good care of them. My passion is designing software that is both functional and easy on the eyes. I develop software on the Filemaker platform and am well versed in all aspects of desktop, mobile, web technologies and UI design.
In addition to Filemaker, I am very also proficient in commercial web design using Adobe Muse, Illustrator, Photoshop and Business Catalyst to integrate FM with Blogs, Custom web apps and eCommerce.
This website (integrated with Filemaker) is a small example of what can be done.

UI design is more then just making your application "pretty", it's the result of both good business analysis and good graphic design.
Using a well designed application means less keystrokes and mouse clicks and increased productivity.
Attention to the little details pays off in increased ROI.
Filemaker expert with more then twenty years of software development (working with Filemaker since Filemaker Pro 3 in 1995) means I have probably already seen whatever problem you are trying to solve.
That reduces development time and lowers your total cost.
Filemaker 14 is now available to the general public - enjoy the benefits today.
Sometimes clients needs to extend beyond Filemaker.
Using various contact management software I can add eCommerce and content management (CRM, blogs, forums, events, and news) to your online solution. I have done full integrations with Adobe's Business Catalyst and others.
My blog is a good example of this technology in action.
Today, we all know that a custom solution running on Windows and MAC computers is great, but it's not enough.
Your staff needs mobile access to your data and your partners (customers, suppliers etc) need to connect to you on the Internet.
I can extend Filemaker with Filemaker GO, Web Direct and to your corporate website.
Easily incorporate icons and text in buttons. Change icon colours directly from FileMaker (hover, press, normal etc).
Match look of drop down buttons, calendars, lists etc to your custom UI and much more.
End layout clutter with in-field labels.
Easily deploy mobile Filemaker solutions on any mobile device.
Now support for WebDirect on Android and Windows Mobile devices.
Totally redesigned Filemaker GO 16 for iOS
Run the newly redesigned scripting engine in a separate window.
Auto complete and in-line editing means less errors and faster coding.
Modern scripting tool will reduce total programming times significantly.
Going beyond the “basic” layout can add a distinctive look to any custom project. Using custom designed visual elements in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is both easy and fun and will add tremendous value to any project.
This portal comes alive in Filemaker using art I created in Adobe Illustrator.

Beyond your typical filemaker layout
The latest design trend is flat. In flat design, icons are big, bold and FLAT, and the UI is bright and colourful.
Microsoft has adopted this style in Windows 8. Flat design is also the basis of Apple’s iOS 8 in iPhones and iPads.
Flat design is taking over the web and is becoming very popular in custom software.
Using Filemaker and custom designed icons and other custom designed UI elements, flat UI is not just possible, its fun to create and make applications so easy to use.

A small chain of restaurants contracted me to develop a modern, sleek, easy to use solution for their operations.
Thanks to Filemaker GO, I was able to replicate their current paper systems which they had used for three generations.
Going “mobile” in this situation meant creating a good design which was both functional and looked good.
The screenshot on the left is the layout as it looks in the development filemaker desktop.
This layoout was created to be viewed in FM go on the iPad.
This standalone Filemaker GO solution prints to non “air print” POS receipt printers using xPrintServer technology from Lantronix.
Using this solution, I was able to send printed copies of food orders directly to the kitchen and a separate copy of the beverage order to the bar to create a very useful and elegant solution.
That’s good design!

The requirement was to simplify a previously written Filemaker solution to search on any combination of eight interrelated dimensions of data for a parts database for a north american manufacturer.
The existing interface required multiple key strokes navigating five layouts. I was able to simplify search on eight portals which refresh “on the fly” as the user clicks on any combination of eight dimensional data portals related to a large parts database using executeSQL functionality.
Having everything on one layout using executeSQL made it possible to search for parts in a few seconds instead of a few minutes. This improved both customer service and the manufacturing process itself without causing screen congestion.
Screen congestion can be a huge problem with many layouts. Cluttered and congested layouts are both difficult to use and unprofessional to look at. Efficient and knowledgeable use of design techniques combined with efficient code made all the difference.
